Requirements Problems

• In order to be evaluated, requirements must be observable, measurable, and as objective as possible
• Invalid requirements can cause many problems in system design and in V&V.
• Here are some examples of invalid requirements:
• – Lightweight
• – Must be better than current system
• – 100% reliability
• – No false alarms
• – Must use proven technology
• Why are they invalid?

Why Invalid?

• Lightweight – not specific enough.
• Must be better than current system – ambiguous; How much better? In what characteristic? What is the current system?
• 100% reliability – unrealistic, impossible to meet
• No false alarms – unrealistic
• Must be proven technology – ambiguous
